Cakes and Cookies

Dear Friends:

Like a fool, I ventured into both Polo Park and St. Vital Shopping Malls. I have not been to either for several years and just wanted to feel the atmosphere and see what the stores were offering.

I am not one to enjoy either the bustle of people, the canned music or the simulated festive¬†ambiance, so I kept wondering what I thought I was missing. It also doesn’t help that I don’t want stuff and neither do the people I have to give gifts to. I would label the experience educational.

I prefer stores like mine: intimate, friendly people to talk to and items to inspire me. Items that are consumable and interesting/different/unique for a gift.

This newsletter is about cakes and cookies. This newsletter is aimed at all the people who no longer can or want to cook, or can’t be bothered. It is also aimed at those poor souls who have lost that person, for whatever reason, that used to cook for them.

We have cakes and cookies that will fill the gap.

First, Cakes: Rum, Gingerbread, Panforte or Traditional Fruit. In the past we have put samples out for customers, and they were gone.

Second, Stollen, with or without marzipan. Christian, who is Romanian/German, says this is the brand they ate in Europe, whenever it wasn’t baked by his grandmother.

Third, Mincemeat Tarts: six tarts, just enough for one person – four for now, two for later!

Fourth, Spekulatius Cookies: plain or milk or dark chocolate. Milk is my favourite – the bag for this picture is not leaving this office!

Christian corrected me, he said they are¬†pronounced¬†“Spekulatius” like spectacular and delicious!

Fifth, Shortbread: four different companies to try, bite-size for the stockings and even a Gluten Free box.

Sixth, Cookies: Cartwright & Butler, these are the ones I wrote about last year, Ginger, Butterscotch or Chocolate Coated. Another box that won’t leave the office!

Finally, etc. Animal Crackers, Pfeffernusse (Iced Gingerbread Cookies) and Chocolate Covered Graham Crackers in Milk or Dark. Milk is always my favourite!

Scoop N’ Weigh, the Candy Store for Grownups!, who have great hiding places for all their treats. If they can’t find it, you don’t have to share, because they don’t know what they are missing!

P.S. One of the latest trendies for the food toting crowd is to make breakfast the night before. The container, usually a glass jar, holds all the ingredients and when it is time to eat, you just mix and nosh.

Kilner, a large glass company, has come out with a Glass Breakfast Jar Set. It contains a jar, tight fitting lid, and spoon.

One of my staff showed me a salad she made that used the same ideas: all the ingredients in one jar and shake before eating. This jar would also be good for that.

P.P.S. Set the tone with paper napkins.

P.P.P.S. Did you get the hint that I like Milk Chocolate covered anything? So if you share the same passion and want to indulge, don’t dawdle, because I work most days until Christmas and work makes me hungry, or at least needy!
